The county's June 2026 guidance and tree-removal flowchart make zoning, lot size, approved plans, and location matter. A general "no permit needed" claim is not safe for every parcel.
Single-family lot under one acre?
The county says no tree-removal permit is required on a single-family residential zoned lot smaller than an acre. Other site restrictions can still apply. Check any approved site plan, tree management plan, overlay district, environmental area, or right-of-way before work.
More than one acre, or five trees?
For single-family residential lots over an acre, removing five or more trees requires a Timber Harvest Notice Application or a Zoning Permit Application to record removal. Ask Planning which route fits your parcel.
Multifamily or commercial property?
The county calls for a Tree Management Plan on multifamily parcels, including lots under 12,500 square feet to record existing and proposed removal. For commercial, industrial, or institutional land, contact the county arborist.
Street tree, protected area, or approved plan?
The official flowchart routes right-of-way trees to the Community Forester and approved plans, environmental areas, or overlay districts to county review. Call Planning before work if any of those may apply.

How will you manage hazards?
Ask about rigging, equipment access, traffic, nearby power lines, and a plan for your home and neighboring property. Keep clear of a tree touching a utility line and contact the utility.
Who checks the parcel restrictions?
Confirm who will contact Athens-Clarke Planning and handle any required notice or plan before cutting. Keep a copy of the decision and paperwork.
